Rampaging youths kill one, raze 30 shanties in Lagos

Lagos, Nigeria, 03/01 - A clash between youths from two neighbouring streets in Ijora Badiya area of Nigeria`s economic capital city of Lagos left one dead and 30 wooden houses razed Monday, media reports said Tuesday.

The dead, identified only as Lekan, was one the three persons shot during the fracas, which also left dozens homeless.

The fighting started following a misunderstanding over the sharing of money extorted from a new hotel operator in the densely-populated area which is home largely to miscreants.

In the ensuing free-for-all, guns, machetes, iron rods and bottles were used by the youths.

The Lagos police command responded by deploying over 50 anti-riot policemen to the area to restore normalcy, one report said.
